During its operational career, the U-27 sunk 29402 tons of shipping, in 10 war patrols, until being sunk the 19th August 1915, in what would become known as the Baralong incident, where the crew of the british ship Baralong, killed 10 survivors of the U-27. The flotille was founded the 25th June 1938, under the command of Korvkpt. Werner Sobe, and was based at Kiel, where it remained based until June 1941, when it moved to St.Nazaire. In the following years, it was under the command of Korvkpt. Hans-Rudolf Rosing, Kptlt. Herbert Sohler, and Korvkpt. Adolf Piening. In 1944 however, the allied advance forced most boats to leave for norwegian bases.

The 30. Unterseebootsflotille was founded in October 1944, and was based in Constanza, Romenia, with its intended area of operations as the Black Sea. Since Turkey was neutral, and according to the Montreux Convention of 1936, couldn't allow the passage of beligerant ships through the Bosphorus or the Dardanelles, and there were no U-boat capable shipyards in either Romenia or Bulgary, there was no alternative but to disassemble U-boats, and transport them to their base. In what was one of the strangest operations of WW2, type IIB U-boats were disassembled at Kiel, then transported by water, on the Elbe, until Dresden, then carried by highway until Ingolstadt, and the operation repeated in the Danube, until they were reassembled in Galatz. The flotilla managed to harass the soviet navy, until October 1944, at which time the flotilla was disbanded, when its last boats were scuttled. During its career, it was under the command of Kptlt.
